Why we don’t offer more discounts
We price our products as low as we can while keeping our enterprises financially viable. Even then, the price of 3R chicken is higher than other chicken because:
We use the best, more diverse feed we can source — it doesn’t come cheap.
We grow on a small scale and can’t take advantage of economies of scale like bulk feed, shipping, etc.
Raising chickens on pasture takes a lot of labour, including daily moves of chickens, feed, water and electricity for fencing. (We exclude labour associated with inefficiencies that are a result of our management preferences.)
On a per-nutrient basis, 3R pasture-raised chickens have better price performance than other chicken — even without a discount!
How limiting our retail discounts helps get chicken to food- insecure families
Our food system is broken and, as a result, nutrient-rich, pasture-raised meat is elite. At 3R, we aim to provide examples for viable alternatives to replace the broken system (we aren’t there yet!) Until then, also work to distribute nutrient-rich meat more equitably.
By limiting the discounts we offer to on-farm customers, we are able to get chicken into the mouths of more community members. In collaboration with the Thames Blue Water Métis Council (Sarah’s local Métis Nation of Ontario chapter) we are able to offer at-cost pricing to food insecure Métis elders and other citizens.
